Kabam Acquires Balanced Worlds Studios in Beijing

Kabam has announced today that they will be acquiring Balanced Worlds Studios, an action-oriented 3D social games company located in Beijing behind the recent title Bomb Buddies.

Balanced Worlds Studios has been in existence since 2006. The company has contributed to a variety of games over the years, including Resistance: Fall of Man, Ratchet & Clank, Red Faction, Descent, the Greg Norman Ultimate Challenge Golf series, Spy Hunter, and the NHL Faceoff seriesTheir team includes three North American AAA developers, CEO Christopher Pfeiffer, COO Alexander Ronalds, and CTO Maxim Garber, who came to China in 2006 to “tap into Asia’s burgeoning social games development community”.

The Balanced Worlds team brings a strong discipline and creative flare in 3D game development that will complement Kabam’s expanding portfolio of games,” said Andrew Sheppard, president of Kabam Studios. “By merging Balanced Worlds’ expertise into Kabam’s already robust studio in Beijing, Kabam will continue to diversify its mobile offerings beyond the enormously popular strategy games Kabam is known for.”

“Our shared vision of high-quality core 3D mobile games is perfectly aligned,” Pfeiffer said. “The Balanced Worlds team is proud to become a highly productive part of Kabam’s amazingly successful mobile-focused studio in Beijing.”

Together, they will be working on Kabam’s mobile projects for iOS and Android here in Beijing. Kabam’s Beijing studio is known for creating last year Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North, and this year their new IPO The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth. With the addition of Balanced Worlds’ Studios 17 employee team, Kabam’s office in Beijing will reach more than 90.

In terms of what he thought about working in China, Pfeiffer said, “Life in China imitates the art of game creation. The feeling of continual progress is intoxicating.”

This news comes after a string of acquisitions since 2010 including WonderHill, Fearless Studios, Gravity Bear, and Wild Shadow Studios.
