Mobile Represents 73% of Telecom Revenue. 3G Users in China Reach 160 Million Mark.

No wonder so many companies in China are scrambling to sell their own smartphones.

Statistics released today reveal that Chinese are moving further towards mobile phone and Internet usage at an incredible rate, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

In total, the number of telephone subscribers reached 1.3 billion with an increase of 43.8 million mobile subscribers and a decrease of about 1.4 million fixed-line users. In other words, mobile users now represent 1.03 billion subscribers, while fixed-line users represent approximately 284 million.

Of these mobile users, approximately 30.6 million joined a 3G network within the past 4 months, reaching approximately 159 million. This means that a 70% majority of new users in the past 4 months were 3G.

Coincidentally, broadband Internet users increased to the same amount at 159 million.

In total, the amount of business revenue in China’s telecom industry increased 10.1% over the same period last year, and mobile now represents approximately 72.6% of that revenue, or 246.1 billion RMB ($40 billion).

The industry is about to explode.
