The smartphone industry in China is beginning to look a bit like a lottery system for new companies.
The theatrics continue unabated with news that Qihoo 360 will also be releasing a budget phone. Manufactured by Huawei, the phones will come in at a 1499RMB price-tag, putting Qihoo 360 and Huawei in price competition with Xiaomi’s new Youth Edition smartphone.
In terms of specs, the phone will be equipped with a 1Ghz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch screen, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage. At this point, it is hard to discern what makes this any different from the competition.
China’s mobile market is now the largest in the world, and its internal competition is obviously heating up as Internet giants and manufacturers begin to recognize the untapped potential of cost-effective smartphones. Yet a lot of these announcements are being made a bit arbitrarily, and it is probable that one of these companies will be swept under the rug.
It remains to be seen which brands are going to be favored this year, and there are certainly going to be a variety of new contenders, perhaps some still unannounced. Who will be the next contestant to join the fierce competition for the hearts, minds, and finger-tips of China’s smartphone fans?
