Korean App-store: Game Category Incentivizes Changes in Gaming Market
At the beginning of November Apple opened a game category on its Korean App-store. It didn’t take long before game companies started posting games. Gamevil put out a total of 30 games on the App-store. In the article James Jung argues that game category will bring with it a new era of cutthroat competition. “While it does the lower the barriers for domestic market entry of foreign-made games, it only highlights the lowering of domestic gaming standards.”
Thousands Line up for Blackberry in Indonesia
BlackBerry was pleased to see strong turnout for the release of the new BlackBerry 9790. Over 3,000 people camped out and stood in line to get the new smartphone. The crowd had so much energy that after rumor spread that the device was sold out their was a violent response that led to the deployment of hundreds of police. Indonesia is one of BlackBerry’s largest markets accounting for almost 10% of its global customer base.
Social Gaming Runs Into Obstacles
The social gaming market is going to have to rethink how they market their games. CastleVille is Zynga’s latest Facebook game and it is also one of their fasted growing. But Zynga’s daily active users have been in a steady decline over the past year. Their Facebook DAU fell from 59 million in the second quarter to 54 million in the third. Out of eight games (Words With Friends, Mafia Wars 2, Adventure World, Empires and Allies, Texas HoldEm Poker, FarmVille, CityVille and CastleVille) only CastleVille and Words With Friends are growing. The others have seen their DAU’s drop as much as one million users.
Mafia Wars 2 likely failed due to lack of innovation as a sequel. For DAU’s of Mafia Wars, the sequel was simply the same game but with different missions and was not able to hold their interest. Other games developers have run into the issue of keeping their numbers up. And the only way to do this is through marketing. EA launched Sims social with great success. It has attracted 33 million users with 19 percent DAU rate. But EA may have spent at least $10 million on marketing Kontagent Williams tells Business Week. The game is not yet marketable. But market saturation is key to attracting the users. “The bottom line:” concludes Business Week, “Gamer fatigue is setting, sending marketing costs up. While Zyngas revenue grew 80 percent in the third quarter, profits fell 54 percent.
Samsung Dropping Netbooks in 2012
Samsung sent an email to its trading partners recently. It apparently stops any prospect of the manufacturer producing new notebooks after its first quarter in 2012. The email originates from french site Blogeee and is translated in the engadget article. The translation says that amusing will discontinue 10.1inch notebooks and will focus on ultraportables and ultrabooks.
Twitter to Parter with Japans Mixi?
Japanese social networking site Mixi is holding a joint press conference with Twitter next week. A partnership between the two seems like the most likely outcome as Mixi runs a service called Mixi-voice, which is similar to Twitter. Twitter is already wildly popular in Japan with over 22.39 million users but this would increase its visibility in the country even more. Despite Twitters strength in the market Facebook’s presence in Japan is growing with Japanese membership increasing more than 18 percent in the past three months.
